Eveline is narrated by an ominiscient character, which is in third person. This perspective allows us as the readers to see Eveline 'from a distance', and this is how Joyce saw things becuase he was not a 'true' Dubliner, as he had lived outside of Dublin, and was able to gain an 'outsider's view' of the city. This 'outsider's view' gives the reader less empathy towards the character, as it is harder to feel how Eveline feels when you do not know all the thoughts that are going through her head.
